The 4th of July is a chance for us to celebrate but it can be a time of heightened stress for our pets. The loud noises and flashing lights can provoke fear and anxiety in dogs and cats . In fact, more dogs run away on July 4th than any other day of the year. Running away from the noise, bright lights and burning smell is a survival mechanism for dogs. But, you can help your four-legged friend get through this Independence Day with a few helpful tips.
You know your dog better than anyone. But, large crowds and fireworks are usually a bad combination for pups. Leaving your dog home might be the best option. Can’t leave home without your best buddy? Make sure that your dog is wearing their collar while ensuring ID tags are legible and up to date.
Whether it’s in a crate or a quiet room, provide your fur ball with a comfortable space away from the lights and noise. This will your dog a feeling of security during fireworks, parties and other stressful events. Keep windows, curtains and doors closed to prevent the ongoing fireworks from startling your pet.
Give your buddy a favorite toy to distract them from the loud noises and bright lights of fireworks. You can also keep a TV on low volume to drown out the noise.
Take your pup for a long walk or game of fetch before fireworks. When your dog is feeling tired dog, they're less likely to be affected by the the sights and sounds of a fireworks display.
