March 01, 2021 #### Written By: VetriScience Diarrhea. Constipation. Bloating. Discomfort. Stomach issues can seriously dampen your pet’s lovable personality and playful self. If your cat or dog appears sluggish, low energy or fatigued, it may be the result of poor gut health. But, you can feed your pet a daily dose of probiotics to get them back on their feet before long! Did you know that roughly 70% of your pet’s immune system lives in the digestive tract? It’s no wonder that stomach issues account for about [10% of all veterinary visits](https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/7-interesting-facts-about-your-dogs-digestive-system). That’s why a healthy gut environment is not only critical to your pet’s digestive and immune health but also their overall health and well-being.   #### **1. Probiotics for Digestive Health ** Probiotics are strains of beneficial bacteria that support digestive wellness, immune system function, and regularity in pets. Probiotics are “friendly” microorganisms that help maintain a critical balance of good bacteria in the digestive system.  Otherwise,  a bacterial imbalance can lead to GI issues including **diarrhea, gas, cramping** and even **bad breath**. Probiotics support immune system health by inhibiting the growth of harmful pathogens that may lead to GI issues and other health challenges. You can find [probiotics for dogs](https://www.vetriscience.com/dog/probiotics.html) and [probiotic supplements for cats ](https://www.vetriscience.com/cat/probiotics.html)as well as products that are appropriate for both species.   #### **2. Probiotics Help with Stress ** [Changes to your pet's routine](https://blog.vetriscience.com/2020/03/how-to-care-for-pets-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak/) can lead to stress and digestive issues. Not only stress but dietary changes and antibiotic treatment can also wreak havoc on your pet’s digestive system. When your pet is anxious or stressed, probiotics can play a key role in normalizing your pet’s digestive health. Whether it’s a vet visit, thunderstorms or new schedule, many pets are prone to stress-related diarrhea or GI upset.  A daily dose of probiotics can help calm a nervous stomach and relieve stress-related GI issues. Not only will your fur ball feel better, but your next road trip or vet visit could be a much smoother experience.   #### **3.
