Fireworks in the sky at night

The 4th of July is a chance for us to celebrate but it can be a time of heightened stress for our pets.

The loud noises and flashing lights can provoke fear and anxiety in dogs and cats. In fact, more dogs run away on July 4th than any other day of the year. Running away from the noise, bright lights and burning smell is a survival mechanism for dogs.

Wondering how to keep dogs calm on the 4th July? Here are some tips to help your pet get through this Independence Day.

1. Keep pets inside

You know your dog better than anyone. But, large crowds and fireworks are usually a bad combination for dogs. On the 4th of July, it's best to leave pets at home.

If you can't leave your pet at home, make sure they are wearing their collar with up-to-date ID tags.

2. Create a safe space

Whether it’s in a crate or a quiet room, provide your pet with a comfortable space away from the lights and noise. This will give your dog a feeling of security during fireworks, parties and other stressful events.

You can also keep windows, curtains and doors closed to prevent the ongoing fireworks from startling your pet.

3. Dog distraction toys

Toys are a great way to help manage and direct your dog’s energy. Give your pet a favorite toy to distract them from the loud noises and bright lights of fireworks. You can also keep a TV on low volume to drown out the noise.

4. Physical and mental exercise

When your dog is feeling tired, they're less likely to be affected by the sights and sounds of a fireworks display. There are lots of fun ways to tire your dog out. For example, take them for a long walk or a game of fetch before the fireworks start. Or, teach them a fun new trick to work their brain!

5. Try calming supplements

Give your pet Calm & Confident (formerly Composure) to support calm behavior during fireworks, thunderstorms and crowded BBQs. Three effective ingredients are clinically shown to work within 30 minutes and last up to 4 hours. Help your pet relax with calming supplements so you can both enjoy July 4th without stress.
